Vermont’s “little grand canyon”…ummm, ok?

While Ben and Mike toiled away getting more bass and jaguar parts finished, Loki & i went to investigate Quechee dam.

The dam is on the Ottauquechee River, and holds back the waters of Dewey’s Mill Pond before they flow over the 30-foot Mill Pond Falls and through Quechee Gorge. Apparently this is called Vermont’s “Little Grand Canyon.”

It’s impressive as dams go, but i think the title “Little Grand Canyon” (even with the ‘little’ in there), is stretching it. I guess this dam has one hell of a big ego.

And here’s Loki, doing his best Regal Beagle impression as a malamute nearby goes nuts on his leash and almost bites his owner.

the path of life

while mike was knocking out drum tracks for another three songs, i took loki to forage for food at a local market and stopped by a lovely art installation called ‘the path of life’ next to the harpoon brewery. no one was around, so we had the whole place to ourselves. it’s pretty cool and includes a maze created from 800 hemlock trees.

loki tried to pee on the ‘tree of wisdom’, but i stopped him in time. that would be bad karma for all time, i’m thinking!

last night when the drum tracking for ‘meteor flights’ was completed, i went outside and the darkness of the trees against the star filled sky was amazing. it’s so easy to forget what true night looks like when you’re always in a city with lots of light pollution everywhere. it was awe-inspiring and reminded me of another night in the woods some 4,000 miles away, that planted the seed for the ‘meteor flights’. it feels like this is the right place and the right time to make this record.

what does a beagle do all day while we’re busy making a record? well, lots of sleeping, exploring, sniffing, eating, more sleeping… he also has to endure me putting various objects / articles of clothing on him (hey, there’s some down time when recording. gotta have some fun too…)

bones and snow

the flakes are coming down ever so softly outside now. after being in the heat of texas and california, it’s hard to get m body around the fact that yes, it is still on the edge of winter here. while on my morning walk with loki, we came across some bones by a little creek. not sure what kind they are, but they have some qualities that made me think “hmmm, not sure if this is just an animal”. also the fact that loki took a quick sniff then stepped back gave me pause; normally he eats first and asks questions later. i’m getting a second opinion, and i’m sure that there will be laughter at the city slicker who can’t even recognize deer bones, or coyote bones, or whatever they may be.

meanwhile, mike is getting ready to record drums for “meteor flights”, “elemental”, and “church bells” and ben is having a great time with the space echo – amazing sounds!

After a quick meander around the neighborhood with Loki, we’ll be climbing into the new-&-improved completely rebuilt Blue – a chevy express with an attitude. Instead of putting another 17,000 miles on old Blue like we did in 2008 alone, our trek is a mere 145 miles to Vermont. This is the place where SOTG will be holed up in an old farmhouse to make our new record.

This record is the culmination of a lot of influences and events. Sweat & tears, relief & release, miles of highway, and that never-ending desire to evolve. You haven’t heard most of these songs, but they’ve been brewing for quite some time.

Check back with us early and often to track our progress as we get into the nitty-gritty of making a record. If you’ve ever wondered ‘what IS it they’re doing all the time! Always practicing so much?!’, we are about to show you.
