tour’s over, headed back east.

many, many miles of road under our belts, sadly another tour has come to an end… headed east into the desert, through the mountains and back to Boston. we had a great time out west, made some new friends, met back up with old ones, and played with some great bands along the way.

*twilight sleep and lookbook… if you don’t know them already you’re missing out. great people, great bands.*

big thanks to the Johnsons and Voskeritchians for some insanely awesome hospitality, very much appreciated.

“Twilight Sleep’s diverse sound is both delicate and dirty… They pull all the stops with warped Hitchcock-esque strings, weeping moog, arpeggiated synths, recordings from a machine shop turned into beat loops, and rock-inspired bass lines, to mention a few. Sometimes nearly child-like in raw emotion, perfectly imperfect, and then relentlessly powerful.”

“Lookbook was formed in mid-2008 by Maggie Morrison (Digitata) and Grant Cutler (Passions, Tomhanks) in Minneapolis. Combining Cutler’s sparkling, synth-laden sounds and sparse guitar with Morrison’s Pat Benatar-meets-Chrissie Hynde vocals, the band garnered rave reviews and an energetic following for a sound that’s at once familiar and unique. Though the band counts Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins as inspiration, Lookbook’s new-old electro sound has found critical acclaim for its leaner, more minimalist take on ‘80s new wave.”

tons and tons of driving so far. on our way to Flagstaff AZ today, barrelling through Texas at the moment. I’ve been through here many times before, but I always forget how huge this place is.

saw some rad stuff in Nashville yesterday; original handwritten lyrics of Bob Dylan’s, as well as an old harmonica of his.

The Weekly Dig posted a new review of Knowledge Machine:
“Knowledge Machine is the second full-length from Static of the Gods, a band that juxtaposes the bombast and grandeur of post-rock with the wistful singing of Jen Johnson. The combination fearlessly works. In “White Flag” Johnson glides through registers, delivering a powerful chorus as a mix of driving bass and distorted guitars burn underneath.

Although the band skillfully melds these aesthetics, they also know when to relegate the spotlight to one or the other. The rhythm section doesn’t quite ramp up the intensity until the second half of the album, but by the time you’ve reached the end, all three parts max out with “True North,” a triumphant song with a trill that swirls around Johnson’s voice. It’s a satisfying end to an album that soars.”
